What is LPG:
LPG is the abbreviation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is extracted from crude oil and natural gas with the main components of LPG being propane and Butane.

LPG is an environmentally friendly source of energy with a wide range of applications: domestic (heating, cooking, hot water production), industrial, agricultural, catering and automotive fuel. When LPG is burnt, it produces the cleanest emissions of all oil-based products, with a low carbon dioxide output.

Compared to other sources of fuel, LPG is:

  • Versatile - it can be used for heating, cooking, refrigeration, as a motor fuel
  • Clean - has reduced carbon emissions; appliances require less maintenance
  • Powerful and safe - it generates heat which is instantly available and readily controlled.
  • Cheaper - it is cheaper than solid fuels because it can be controlled and its heat is efficient for the purpose

LPG Cylinders:
Retail gas comes in 3kg, 6kg, 13kg, 22.5kg & 50kg cylinders which are tested before & after filling against the best safety & quality standards.

Every LPG cylinder has permanent markings engraved on either Footring, Collar or sometimes on the body. This markings are indelible and reproduced whenever the portion holding them is replaced. Mandatory markings include:

Cylinder Markings:

  • Manufacturer of Cylinder
  • Manufacturing Standard
  • Design Pressure
  • Test Pressure
  • Water Capacity (volume of the cylinder)
  • Serial Number (each cylinder has a serial number)
  • Tare weight
  • LPG carrying capacity (in Kg)
  • test date (consisting of month and year of last test date). Test date of the cylinder is crucial to consumers as the law does not allow a cylinder to be in the market for more than eight years before being re-tested.

In addition to above markings, LPG cylinders also have other markings in bold ink showing tare weight and sometimes both tare weight of cylinder and expected total weight after refill.
